How To Make Vetkoek

It's said that if you eat vetkoek on New Year's Eve, your dreams will come true in the coming year! 

And we're not talking about the kind of vetkoek you can eat, although we're sure that's delicious. No, we mean the kind that's going to turn your life upside down, flip it on its head and make you question everything you thought you knew about food. But don't worry! We'll be here to guide you through this wild ride.

It's a common question that many South Africans ask: "Where did vetkoek come from?" Well, there's a lot of debate about it. Many people believe that the Dutch brought it over with them when they first came to South Africa, but others say that the Bantu people were making it long before then.

It's also possible that the Portuguese brought vetkoek with them when they settled in Mozambique and spread it throughout Africa.

But what really matters is this: Vetkoek is delicious.

So If you've ever wanted to make vetkoek, but don't know how and are afraid of getting it wrong, then here is the recipe for making fatcakes.

Ingredients :

  • 1 kg flour ( 2 Pounds of Flour)
  • 1/2 cup oil
  • 4 tsp sugar
  • 1 pkt Instant Yeast
  • 4 cups warm water
  • Pinch of Salt

 

Step 1: Add your instant yeast, a pinch of your sugar.

 

 

Step 2: Add about half of your warm water into a large mixing bowl and swirl and wait 5 minutes unitl you see a little froth

 

Step 3: Add in the flour, sugar, salt give it a mix while you add the water little bit by little bit.

Step 4: Mix the vetkoek dough nicely 

Step 5: Now add the oil and mix the vetkoek dough

 

Step 6: Knead the vetkoek dough for 5 minutes form a ball and cover it with a dish cloth. Leave it to rise for 45 minutes.
